And if so, how do I hear God speak to me? These are excellent questions and ones that we need not be confused about. Yes, God still speaks to us. But how He communicates has been lost in the confusing doctrine that the Devil uses to get us off course. It is easy to listen to the wrong voices and our feelings regarding listening for Gods voice. And there are various methods recorded for us in the bible of how God communicated with His people.
We have recorded for us in the four gospels the life and words of Jesus when He walked the earth over 2,000 years ago. The words of Christ are perfect, wise, accurate, and spoken with authority. God did not leave things up to chance. Instead, he inspired men to write exactly what He wanted to say, and the result has been changed hearts over thousands of years. But of course, the bible is all from God and not man, which includes all 66 books.
A voice that I can only hear if I reach some spiritual level that few achieve? No. I want to make my view on this issue clear and simple because what we hear and see in today’s charismatic movement and what has been taught in many churches is not in line with what the bible teaches.
Are we looking for some magical feeling and emotional high? Or to build up our pride as some super-Christian with a unique and special relationship with the Lord? These are too often practiced and paraded as authentic doctrine among the word of faith movement, but they are not found in the actual Word of God. However, we should know and hear God speak to us as Christians.
Jesus said,
If you have never been saved, that is the starting point. You can find out how right here:
What Does it Mean to be Saved? How Can I Know I am Saved?
We are never too young to start reading the bible. God will do wonders for their little minds. Unlike critical race theory.)
Then we need to take the time to read what God has already said. We hear all kinds of voices in our heads every day. (I hope I am not the only one) That doesn’t mean we’re crazy (even though it can). It just means we have thoughts going through our minds. And when it comes to hearing God speak, we should not be confused. Most surprising is that about 96% of the thoughts you and I have had today are the same ones from yesterday.
Man has come a very long way as far as learning about the human mind. However, our brains are so complex and detailed, so much remains a mystery. For example, while we know that neurotransmitters carry signals in the brain, it isn`t like we can physically see thoughts. As far as I know, they have yet to perform a thought transplant. So thinking the same ideas over and over surprised me until I learned that our brains do this instinctively.
It is a survival issue, and once our brains learn what is necessary, it sees no need to go further. This is one of the reasons why we can become so very bored with things. ( Or, It could just be that some things are boring )
Our subconscious minds are good at doing things the same way every time.
The brain will use the least energy and effort possible once it determines how to do something. We are the ones that tell our bodies and minds to accept or not accept something. Once we do, and we keep repeating it, we go into autopilot. If I already know how to get to the store, I do not need to get out the map and chart my course. Instead, I think of a place I want to go, hop in the and think a hundred different thoughts and end up where I wanted to go with little thought of how to get there.
So no matter who we are, programs are running through our minds constantly, which have developed over time. And all kinds of thoughts can pop into our minds at any given moment. So how do I know if it is God speaking to me in my mind? The Lord knows our thoughts, and His thoughts are higher than ours. So taking the word of God and filling our mind with truth is what we must do.
We bring our thoughts in line with the word of God. That requires effort and discipline because our flesh and the world are at constant odds with Gods truth. How can we do that if we do not put the word of God in our minds in the first place? So that is where we fight the battle.
I believe there are many occasions where we are not entirely sure. So we must pray and ask God to direct our steps and use discernment and good judgment. At the very least, we should eliminate things that do not line up with God’s word from our thinking and decisions.
Often we learn later on that we were hearing from God or not, and other times we may never know. He does not guarantee all things will work out the way we want them to. He does not owe us an explanation for anything He commands us to do.
Our earthly parents do the same thing. Why? Because they know more than we do, and kids are too young to understand. “Do it because I said so” is what I would hear from my mom. Be careful if someone comes up to you and tells you they have a word for you from the Lord. While that person’s intentions may be good, their theology is not. We tend to want to act as though we live in Ancient times where they did not have the complete revelation of God, only the first five books for a very long time. And very few had that.
We do not need some obscure word from someone else when we have God`s complete revelation in the bible.
Our intentions to hear God speak to us may be suitable. But if we seek to listen to Him apart from His word, we will be deceived. God often used Angels throughout the bible as His messengers. But looking for or wanting to hear from angels will get us in trouble. At the same time, we are told to be kind to strangers as we could be entertaining an Angel. Of course, you and I can change our appearance with our hair and clothes to some degree. But Angels can look just like any human. Or, they can appear in great light and power.
And demons are fallen angels smarter and more powerful than humans, and we can be deceived.
I think we tend to want exceptional, emotional experiences to verify in our minds our knowledge is actual.
That can lead us into dangerous doctrine and hearing voices we may think are from God but are not. Jesus said that the “Just shall live by faith.”
And concerning Angels, Paul warns us not to listen to any other voice but the gospel of Christ. False doctrine is from the Devil meant to turn people away from Jesus and follow him instead.
And any religion that does not bring you to Christ according to the gospel is false doctrine. And anyone who claims they know how to hear God speak other than through His word is someone who you would be wise to ignore. I would rather people be upset and told the truth than tickle their ears and them go to hell.
All roads do not lead to heaven. Jesus talked more about hell than He did heaven to warn people of God`s Holy judgment and wrath for sin.
We see so much human corruption and a lack of justice with men. But that is not the case with the Holy God of heaven. He perfectly executes judgments and justice without prejudice. He is no respecter of persons and treats us all the same in regards to right and wrong.
People will go to hell because they chose to go by willfully rejecting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. So we submit to Him as Lord, and we receive by faith the forgiveness of our sins. Simple and necessary. So make sure you know Him, and when you do, you will want to follow Him and obey Him in the deepest part of your soul. Of course, you will fail many times along the way, but you cannot fall out of God`s grace and are “sealed” by the Holy Spirit.
Not getting tangled up in false doctrine must remain a priority for us no matter how long we have been Christians or how many verses we know. Remember, many will claim they served God in this life, yet Jesus will say He never knew them. I am sure they think they know how to hear God speak, but we can also see how people live if there is any truth to what they say.
Be alert because we have an enemy who seeks to devour us. So be watchful and pay attention just as you would be if you were on the front lines in a war under fire. I doubt you would be careless knowing someone was shooting at you, trying to kill you. So that is the mindset we need to have spiritually every day.
More and more these days, so many want to claim that God spoke to them in a dream or a voice from heaven. That is the pinnacle of arrogance and disrespect for God and His word.
We must guard against assigning our emotions and experiences to God, influencing others to seek the same type of experience. They hear your supernatural and emotional experience and conclude that they are missing something.
Today we have self-proclaimed prophets who claim they speak on behalf of God as though they are Moses, Daniel, or one of the Apostles.
They claim to have a new revelation from God. Or, God told me this was going to happen or that. Stay away from such teachers or preachers.
Of course, a preacher has the considerable responsibility of speaking for God, so to speak, but not on his own accord. They are charged with faithfully and accurately proclaiming what the Word of God says. I am also accountable to God for anything I say regarding Him. I only want to tell you what the word of God clearly states. My own opinions and experience mean nothing.” May God be found true and every man a liar.”
We live in a culture that craves something different and exciting—always looking to change and find something better or new. Once that wears off, then people look for the next, and on it goes.
Revelation 22:18-19 gives us strong warnings against adding to God’s word or subtracting from it.
Jesus is not going to come to you at night and give you a new revelation. We already have the written word that never changes because God never changes.
If we want to hear God speak to us, then we need to read the bible. The Holy Spirit guides believers into all truth and points us to Jesus and the word of God. He will help us to understand scripture. He Gives us discernment and understanding, convicts, and reproves us. Many teach that we need to get quiet and remove all thought, and then we will hear some audible voice from God.
That is more in line with Paganism and witchcraft. King Saul is an example of someone was seeking to connect with God apart from His clear teaching in scripture. He was stripped of his position of power and killed in battle.
Besides, that is not how Jesus taught us to pray.
Think of all the stupid and ungodly decisions that started with someone claiming to hear from God. Men have left their families behind for other women, and women have taken on the title and role of pastor, and both are in violation of God’s word and standards. Unfortunately, churches have allowed the culture to determine right and wrong, and no one can tell the difference between the church and the world.
All would claim they heard from God, but if you and I take the time to read and listen to the authentic voice of God, we can discern right from wrong and see these acts for what they are.
And most importantly, not be led astray by them.
You do not need to meditate for six hours, hoping that you have somehow pleased God. Once you meet this unwritten and false standard, then He will speak to you. Of course, this carries no credibility or truth so disregard that for what it is, false. The truth is that If you get in God`s word every day and keep at it, He will speak truth into your mind and change you day by day.
It is a contradiction for us to say we know the voice of God if we do not know His word.
Do not leave it up to men to tell you what is in the bible.
Please pick it up yourself and read it all. Over and over for the rest of your life.
How do you hear God speak? First, you will hear the voice of God loud and clear in the pages of His word. And as you become more familiar with His voice, you will also recognize the voices that are not His.
